Programs that provide a comprehensive, structured evaluation of a child’s cognitive/intellectual functioning, language and communication skills, independent living skills, social and emotional development and perceptual/motor functioning in order to identify individuals who show developmental delays, determine the nature and extent of the problem and recommend a course of treatment and care. Eligibility:

Infants and toddlers under the age of three who have a developmental delay in speech, physical ability or social skills. Coverage areas include: Charlestown, Coventry, East Greenwich, Exeter, Hopkinton, Jamestown, Middletown, Narragansett, New Shoreham, Newport, North Kingstown, Portsmouth, Richmond, South Kingstown, Warwick, West Greenwich, West Warwick and Westerly.

As of 11/23/2021, there is a waiting period for Early Intervention
services. Referred children will be placed on a statewide waitlist, and
families will be contacted about their referral. They will be given the
option to be matched with the first provider in their community who
has an opening, or they can choose to wait for a specific provider who
serves their community.

There are several ways to refer a child to the Early Intervention
statewide waitlist.

• Refer to the agency that you typically would, via phone, fax or

Services Provided:

Early Intervention services are designed to enhance the development of infant and toddlers (birth-age 3)
Fully-licensed, credentialed and caring pediatric professionals provide expertise in these areas: Occupational, Physical, and Speech/Language Therapy, Early Childhood Special Education, Social Workers, Nutrition and Nursing
Services for children: Developmental Evaluations, Therapeutic and Educational Home Visits, Feeding/Nutrition Programs, Assertive Technology, Sensory Integration Home Programs, Developmental Monitoring, Service Coordination, parent support and advocacy training.

The Office of Family Learning is a vital and active component of the North Kingstown School Department. All Family Learning Programs are school-based or school-linked to enhance and support the district's commitment to student achievement through family learning. As the "Door to the District" we strive to help all families feel engaged in their children's education, supported in their parenting journey, and confident in their ability to be their child's first and best teacher.

As the town's designated Child Opportunity Zone site or COZ (pronounced COZY), we have been serving children and families in our community for over 20 years. Most family education programs are available to all North Kingstown families and many are offered at no charge.

One of the goals of Early Intervention is to provide support to families so their children can develop to their fullest potential.

Services are provided in places where children usually play or take part in daily activities. Caregivers are included in all visits to encourage carry-over between visits. Specialized therapy services (Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech & Language Therapy), as well as nutritional, nursing and family support are provided. Many services take place in the child’s home, but may also occur at the EI center, child care center, or community setting.

This screening is different from a medical check-up, and does not take the place of visits to the doctor.
