Disability Related Transportation

Programs that provide door-to-door (or curb-to-curb) transportation for purposes of shopping, banking, social events, medical appointments, getting to and from work, and similar activities for people with disabilities who need special accommodations and are unable to utilize other available means of transportation. Also included are programs that provide transportation for youngsters with disabilities who have no other means of accessing necessary specialized services and activities. (AIRS BT-4500.6500-170)

Eligibility: Eligibility requirements in place for reduced bus fare program. See website. RIde is a paratransit service provided under ADA and is available for an individual whose disability either prevents independent use of the fixed route system or prevents travel to or from bus stops.

ADA Paratransit program
Provider Profiles: The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) is a quasi-public, independent authority. Established in 1966, RIPTA is authorized to operate public transit services throughout the State of Rhode Island.

Reservations are required for all paratransit services. Reservation procedures are described under Scheduling Trips.

Under federal regulations, ADA Paratransit Service must operate within a 3/4-mile corridor on either side of a fixed route. ADA service operates during the same hours that the fixed route bus runs. All ADA trips must start and end in the corridor.
