Paul V. Sherlock Center on Disabilities, founded at Rhode Island College in 1993, is a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD). UCEDDs are evidence driven and designed to advance policies, practices, and research that improve the health, education, social, and economic well-being of people with disabilities, their families, and their communities. There are 67 UCEDD programs in the United States. This national network is administered through the United States Department of Health and Human Services Administration on Developmental Disabilities.
The Sherlock Center partners with state and national agencies, schools, institutions of higher education and community providers to implement its core functions: preservice preparation, services (including technical assistance, community education, and direct services), research, and information dissemination. As of 2016, the Sherlock Center is a LEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities) Program.

Family Coaching and Visitation Center Providing coaching and supervised visitation for children and families who have suffered maltreatment. The Ronald McDonald House of Providence provides a home-away-from-home for families of children receiving over-night care at area hospitals or out patient treatment 2-3 times per week. Families of pregnant woman in need of long term hospitalization also welcome.

Each year nearly 300 families stay at the Ronald McDonald House of Providence and an additional 1,900 enjoy the comforts of the Family Room.

We support families with children from birth to 21 years old who are hospitalized or receive major medical treatment at nearby hospitals.

The Ronald McDonald House of Providence provides programs that directly improve the health and well-being of hospitalized children and their families. Our programs allow families to spend additional time with a sick child, help ease financial burdens, provide a sense of normalcy and keep families together during times of medical crisis. Siblings and families are welcome to also stay.

Tower Street Community center is a open site for summer meals. It is open to anyone 18 years and younger and no paperwork is required.

13-18 years old and live with a chronic medical illness. We accept new TALC members year round. Mentors age 18-22 and live with a chronic medical illness.

TALC is a program for adolescents (age 13-18) who live with chronic  medical illness and their families.  We provide year-round programming focusing on support, advocacy, and healthcare transition skills.

Transitioning from childhood to being a teenager, to the independence of young adulthood is challenging. Consider what it would be like to cope with typical teen angst and have to manage a chronic illness as well.

For teens with a variety of chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, lupus, cancer, sickle cell anemia, Crohn’s disease, and epilepsy, they don’t have to do it alone. The Adolescent Leadership Council (TALC) provides a forum for adolescents ages 13-18 who are managing a chronic illness to interact with peers who are going through similar experiences and to meet college-age mentors who also have a chronic illness. Through programming, TALC members gain insights and perspective along with the confidence and advocacy skills needed to navigate their medical circumstance in the short- and long-term.

TALC teens meet monthly during the academic year, participate in social and art-related events, attend an annual team-building retreat and an annual overnight summer leadership camp. TALC also serves as the official “Youth Advisory Council” for the hospital.

The Medical Psychiatric Program at Hasbro Children’s Hospital addresses the needs of children and adolescents who are struggling with psychiatric and medical illness at the same time. Patients we care for may have gastrointestinal illnesses, eating disorders, diabetes, asthma, seizures, pain syndromes, somatoform disorders, and complex presentations that require diagnostic evaluations.

Ours is the only program in the region designed to provide family-based integrated care for young people with these health challenges. Inpatient and partial hospital levels of care are available. 

Eligibility indicates that the child has one or more developmental challenges or diagnostic conditions that are associated with developmental delays. International Language Bank (ILB) is a fee-for-service program that provides in-person interpretation, document translations, over-the-phone interpreting, and 24-hour emergency services by qualified experts. These services are offered to all members in our community who need assistance bridging the language barriers between providers/clients. We are currently offering over 30 different languages 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. ILB is the sole proprietor of CSEA. Proceeds from the ILB goes to support CSEA’s other community-based programs.

Established as a nonprofit in 2004, Rewarding Work was the first web-based matching service directory in the nation to focus exclusively on assisting people of all ages with disabilities. That mission continues today, connecting job candidates available to support elders, and children and adults with disabilities—at home or in the community.

Building Inclusive Futures

The goal of The Building Inclusive Futures Program is to offer support, resources, and services to families, participants, and/or students (age 18 and over) transitioning from high school who want to be proactive and design their future.

Circles of Connection program which helps combat social isolation, build interest-based support networks, and nurture advocacy skills link

The Arc Rhode Island Family Advocacy Network leads state-level public policy activities as well as provides training, public awareness and education, and grassroots advocacy building to protect the rights of Rhode Islanders with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).

We have groups for siblings ages 4-7 years old, 8-12 years old, and teens. Siblings meet together for 4-6 sessions, and each meeting lasts about 1-1/4 hours. Parents of SibLink group participants also meet to address their questions and concerns about siblings.
Families do not need to patients of Hasbro Children's or Bradley hospitals to enroll in SibLink.

SibLink groups are designed to improve healthy siblings' understanding and positive adjustment to a brother or sister's illness or disability in an atmosphere of peer support. SibLink's group program is open to the public and provides a great opportunity for healthy brothers and sisters to meet and share with other children whose families face similar circumstances.
SibLink groups are a team effort! Doctors Debra Lobato and Wendy Plante take turns coordinating the groups and meeting with parents. Since SibLink is part of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, we make it our business to train future child psychologists, psychiatrists, and pediatricians about sibling needs. The Brain Injury Association of Rhode Island is dedicated to increasing awareness of brain injury and its consequences, providing education to prevent brain injury, and enhancing the quality of life for those affected by brain injury.

The Brain Injury Association of Rhode Island, Inc. is a public, nonprofit corporation, tax exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and is a chartered affiliate of the Brain Injury Association of America.

Children under age 19 (up to 21 in certain cases) with behavior issues, juvenile delinquency or other problems that place them at risk of involvement with the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF). 

Available for families living in the West Urban Core or more specifically the communities of Providence and Cranston. 

The Family Care Community Partnership (FCCP) serves families at-risk for involvement with the Rhode Island Department of Children Youth and Families.

FCCP services include referrals; triage; initial needs screening; in-person intake; resource information; referral and linkages to community resources; and high-fidelity wraparound services (which include crisis stabilization and are a type of family preservation service).

Child & Family is the largest and most comprehensive social service provider in Newport County, and one of the largest in the State of Rhode Island.  It is a center for community involvement – a place where people come together to give help, to receive help and to support the work of others. Provides emotional and informational support to families of children who have special needs. This site highlights state's organizations that have parent to parent support as a core program and are committed to implementing evidence-based practices.

Provided advocacy and expands opportunities and enhances the quality of life of children and young adults with disabilities and their families. PACER is staffed primarily by parents of children with disabilities and works in coalition with 18 disability organizations. A significant Learning Center, Resources, and specifically for Students and Young Adults.

A national program dedicated to the interests of brothers and sisters of people with special health and developmental needs.

Promotes quality health care for all children and youth, particularly those with special health care needs. Working with family leaders and professional partners at the local, state, regional, and national levels since 1992, Family Voices (a family-led organization) has brought a respected family perspective to improving health care programs and policies and ensuring that health care systems include, listen to, and honor the voices of families. Veterans, current military members, descendants of VFW eligible veterans and their families. Must have children under the age of 18 in their custody.

An on-campus center located in Michigan that provides a productivity-based program open to eligible families of current military personnel, veterans, and descendants of members of the VFW and its Auxiliary. Participating families can be one or both parents with children under age 18 in their custody. Services may include case management, housing, childcare and other support so they can productively work toward goals for a better future. Helpline staff will assist callers with eligibility questions and find additional resources if not eligible.COVID-19 Update: Following all CDC and state guidelines.

An online resource that supports families with seriously ill children through: Education, information, and tools, to address parent's psychological and emotional issues.
Provides community to connect families and minimize isolation and advocacy for pediatric palliative care.

Parents of children in the NICU, anticipating a difficult birth, or transitioning home

Supports, comforts, informs, and guides families who experience a premature birth.

Services Include:

• NICU, transition home, and remembrance care package programs
• Trained preemie parent mentors available 24/7 via email, phone, and text
• MyPreemie, the market-leading app for parents of premature babies
• Online communities with tens of thousands engaged parents making new connections

Helps families before, during, and after a NICU stay and infant loss by providing powerful resources for the whole family, and most importantly, one-on-one mentoring from someone who has been there.

For military families with a special needs family member

Provides information for military families with special needs. Designed to share information with military families on Department of Defense efforts and civilian community programs to support families with special needs within the military community.
