The Office of Disability, Access, and Inclusion (DAI) collaborates with partners across campus to provide equal access for students. Disability is a vital component of diversity on our campus, and we honor the rights of our students by actively and respectfully addressing disability related barriers in living and learning environments at URI.

Students who self-identify and provide the Disability Services Center with appropriate documentation of their condition may be eligible to receive reasonable accommodations in accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and analogous state laws. The Disability Services Center is also available to advise any student who needs information about how to obtain appropriate documentation of a disability.

Support services may include classroom and testing accommodations, advisement, referrals, and the use of assistive technology.

The Disability Services Center is at Fogarty Life Science - Room 137

The central location on campus for disability-related services for students and is a primary resource to educate, train, and guide the college community in understanding disability access, rights, and responsibilities.

Rhode Island College is committed to providing accommodations for students with disabilities and supporting them in achieving their academic goals. Rhode Island College students with disabilities who wish to request reasonable accommodations must meet with a member of the Disabilities Services Center’s staff.

Academic Skills Center

Disability Services has three primary goals:

• To provide support services and reasonable accommodations that allow all students equal access to Salve Regina programs, regardless of disability.
• To provide students with the opportunity to realize their full potential by developing self-awareness and self-advocacy skills.
• To provide students with general disability information and information about resources (local, state and federal) that can assist them in their academic and/or life goals.

Salve Regina is committed to providing students with disabilities equal and integrated access to all of its educational, residential, social and recreational programs. The Office of Disability Services, as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, ensures that students with disabilities receive appropriate accommodations and assistance in order to participate fully in University programs.

The College makes every effort to provide reasonable accommodations so that students can be ensured equal access and works to remove any barriers which may prevent this from happening.
Students with documented disabilities may register with the Office of Academic Services to request academic accommodations. The Assistant Director for Disability Services will discuss each student’s unique needs and help to determine the types of accommodations that are appropriate.

Disability Support Services (DSS) assists RISD students who have cognitive (learning), psychological and physical disabilities. In order to receive accommodations, students must be registered with DSS.

Postsecondary curriculum of study to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who begin the program between 18-23 years of age.

• Person Centered Planning
• Support staff attends the class with the student
• Additional assistance through a two hour support class.
• Work specialty area. Most students are placed on-campus with a support staff member in their first year and gradually they have the opportunity to explore off campus placements.
• Students live on and off campus.

The Mason Learning into Future Environments (LIFE) Program is a supportive academic university experience that offers a four year postsecondary curriculum of study to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who begin the program between 18-23 years of age.

Students completing their four years with the Mason LIFE Program will graduate with a George Mason Certificate of Completion with a catalog concentration and a work specialty area.

Landmark College is a community designed exclusively for students who learn differently, including students with a learning disability (such as dyslexia), ADHD, autism, or executive function challenges. We champion a strengths-based model for education, giving students the skills and strategies they need to succeed in life.

PAL students are fully mainstreamed in their classes and receive additional support on a proactive basis. Students work in individual and/or small classes with a PAL faculty member developing strategies in areas such as reading comprehension, written language, speaking, listening, organization, and time management.

Our academic program is geared toward bright, college-able students who have a primary diagnosis of a language-based learning disability, executive function weakness, and/or AD/HD, and who have average to superior intellectual ability.

We accept students with a wide range of learning disabilities. To apply to Dean College and the Arch Learning Community program see website for information and fees.

The Arch Learning Community at Dean College helps students with diagnosed learning disabilities or differences by offering cohort classroom learning, customized coaching, weekly seminar classes and specialized advising.

The widely regarded Arch Learning Community program at Dean College is designed to provide comprehensive support to students with diagnosed learning disabilities and/or other learning differences, such as attention and memory difficulties, who would benefit from additional academic support while taking part in a traditional college curriculum.

Bentsen Learning Center provides 3 Tiers of Support

The program offers a customized, individualized approach that provides opportunities for students to learn in different ways and apply academic skills to the college setting.

Thames at Mitchell College link 

Thames at Mitchell College is a holistic college transition program for students with learning differences or students who would benefit from additional preparation to succeed in college—and it’s right on the campus of Mitchell College, which has been long-recognized for its innovative support for students with learning differences. This unique program offers a highly individualized learning environment and a strong social network that feels safe and supportive.

The Mystic Program

Mystic is a fee-based program available to first-year Mitchell College students who are ready for college, but who would benefit from added residential support during their first year on campus. 

The goal of the Bentsen Learning Center (BLC) is to assist students with diagnosed learning differences and attention deficit disorders in developing study and self-advocacy strategies to enable them to survive and thrive in the college environment. The overarching goal communicated to students is that of independence and empowerment in their academic pursuits.

A fee-based comprehensive academic support program, the Bentsen Learning Center fosters a holistic approach by continually assessing students’ progress in developing their academic skills. The program assists students in learning and applying strategies that will move them toward effective learning and independence.

Threshold at Lesley University is a non-degree postsecondary program for young adults with diverse learning, developmental, and intellectual disabilities.

First and Second Year Comprehensive Transition Program (CTP) which allows students to apply for financial aid. Requires a minimum of 20 a week on campus.

First and Second Year Certificate of Completion. Not eligible for financial aid.  Requires a minimum of 7.5 hours a week on campus.  

Project Forward is a nationally renowned program that provides students with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to gain and maintain vocational skills, keys to independent living, and pathways to social success. 

If you have applied to BC and been admitted, you are eligible to apply to join the BASE program.

Students in the BASE program should be able to live semi-independently on a college campus, while attending and fully participating in academic life as well as the BASE program.

The BASE program helps students learn and apply skills and strategies needed to navigate all aspects of college life, both academic and social, and prepare for their chosen careers and life beyond college.

The Bridgewater Academic and Social Experience (BASE) program at Bridgewater College is a student-centered, individual support program for students on the autism spectrum or other students who feel they may benefit from the support provided.

ACCESS Extravaganza (Adapting to College, Co-creating Empowered, Successful Students)
This optional Fall program is designed specifically for newly enrolled students that intend to collaborate with SAS. Participants and their families will learn about navigating their unique roles in the higher education environment and what resources are available to promote their success.

Student Accessibility Services collaborates with matriculated students that have documented learning, intellectual, or cognitive disabilities; medical diagnoses or physical challenges; psychological diagnoses and autism. 

Think College is a national organization dedicated to developing, expanding, and improving inclusive higher education options for people with intellectual disability.

• College Search: Searchable directory of college programs for students with intellectual disability. Search by name, location, and keywords.
• Resource Library: Think College creates and curates a variety of resources on topics related to postsecondary education for people with intellectual disability.
• Family Resources: Information about planning, preparing, and applying for college.
