FRIENDS WAY offers open-ended groups for children ages 3 to 18 and their families following the death of a significant person in their lives. There is no fee charged for participation in our programs. All sessions are facilitated by a qualified clinician and professionally trained volunteers.

Rhode Island’s only bereavement center dedicated to serving children and teens, ages three to eighteen, and their families.

FRIENDS WAY remains steadfast in our commitment of providing peer support to grieving families in a safe, nurturing environment and is staffed with mental health professionals and extensively trained volunteers from the community who assist children and their families through their grief with comfort and support from peers struggling with similar feelings of loss.

FRIENDS WAY is a division of Gateway Healthcare, a Lifespan partner. With multiple locations throughout Rhode Island, Gateway is the largest provider of behavioral health care services in the state and serves more than 15,000 clients annually.

Adults and children are eligible if they:

1. Live in South County (Washington County)

1. Live in a household with a child under 18, or someone who is pregnant

1. Receive primary or behavioral health care from a local community health center 

1. Have a physical condition and mental health issues, or have difficulty with substances including tobacco use

The Miriam Hospital is a part of Lifespan health system, a not-for-profit health system affiliated with The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and partnered with Hasbro Children's Hospital, Bradley Hospital, Newport Hospital, Gateway Healthcare, and Coastal Medical. 

The free, confidential phone line, 1-855-543-5465, connects parents and caregivers to an experienced clinician that can help them access children’s services in Rhode Island, and determine the best place to go for treatment and counseling.

• Having severe worries.
• Hurting himself/herself or others.

Kids’ Link RI™ is a behavioral health triage service and referral network. A program offered in collaboration with Gateway Healthcare, Lifespan, Hasbro Children's Hospital and Bradley Hospital, Kids’ Link RI is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to help triage children and youth in need of mental health services and refer them to treatment providers.​
